Spring is finally here. Domestic goddess love this time of year as every nook and cranny gets refreshed. Spring cleaning is also a good time to evaluate how things look and how our home is functioning. We strip out the old and throw out the broken, the project that never came about and the clutter.

Spring cleaning is also a good thing to do in our shops too! Clean up just like you do at home. Clean the walls, sweep the corners, throw out the ribbon you haven't used for 10 years, trash the old vases or sell them. Don't forget to spring clean the books and magazines. Evaluate your cost of goods, labor costs or other expenses you see as too high and clean them up as needed.

As we clean up our shops and business we'll be more prepared for the holidays that come at us back to back this year. Happy Spring Cleaning
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">The world lost a caring, giving, kind, loving, wonderful, humble, devoted, wise, hardworking and humorous husband, father and friend, Mark Henry Tillotson. He peacefully passed away Thursday, October 14, 2010 at home with his loving daughter and son-in-law by his side, due to complications of cancer. He was born June 1, 1941, the son of Mark L. and Olive Klenke Tillotson. He was a life-long resident of <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">Ogden<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;"> and graduated from Ogden High in 1959. His grandparents started the business that he nurtured and loved all his life, Klenke Floral was his passion, pride and joy. Mark worked hard every day of his life because working was what he loved to do. He spent a lifetime pleasing and serving the community of <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">Ogden<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">. He considered his employees and customers his friends and family. He and his wife made countless life time “floral” friends. He worked alongside his parents and later his wife and children. Mark married his eternal companion, Paula Jean Beech Tillotson on November 16, 1974. They were married for time and all eternity in the <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">Ogden<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">LDS<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;"> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">Temple<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;"> in 1989. They raised three children; Eric Tillotson, of <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">California<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 9pt;">; a daughter, his pride and joy, Andrea and amazing son-in-law, Scotty Scoggins; a special son Markie, who returned to his Father in Heaven in 1999. He missed him every day. He was proud of his two wonderful grandsons, Tyson and Cooper and his daughter -in-law Candace (Lance) Roberts. He taught his children to work hard and served others with love and compassion. His example of hard work, honesty, loyalty and determination will be remembered by all. He is also survived by his sister, Rawnie (Rod) Murphy, Burley ID; his brothers and sisters in-law, Paul and Jacquie, Larry and Caren, Jon and Shirley, Carl and Joan, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles where he played cards with the same friends for 40 years. Mark enjoyed many activities such as bowling, The Ogden Gun club, shooting traps and reloading shells with his life-long friend Buck, time spent with his friends and family in Star Valley and St. George riding four wheelers, playing Mexican train, and golfing were always a cherished memory. He also enjoyed cruising, traveling, and family vacations with his wife and children. He loved vintage cars and old movies. His favorite past-time was sharing Creamies with his dog Lucky, while in the comfort of his Lazy Boy watching his favorite show, Two and a Half Men. He was a member The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many callings and he looked forward to his home teaching. He believed in the power of prayer and had a very special relationship with the Lord. He will be reunited with his mother, father, wife and son in Heaven. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 20th at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mark “Tilly” Tillotson Scholarship fund at Weber County School District, 5320 So. Adams Ave. Ogden, Utah, 84405.

Over the past years professional florists have seen more avenues open up for people to purchase flowers. The times have gone from only arranged flowers given as gifts to a more European approach of unarranged and hand-tied bouquets as floral gifts. The venues that have opened up to floral sales have made it known often that they sell flowers too. What have you done to let people know you sell flowers and can compete with these other venues?

More often than not I hear florists mention that they can’t compete with price. We are under the impression that several hundreds of bouquets are being sold to these vendors and that is how they get such a good price. My experience is that these vendors do price bouquets a very small profit margin. There are multiple reasons for each company choosing the price structure that they do. Some do a modest flower business so they simply can say that they offer that service. Others have developed a branded look. Some do them as a loss leader, just to get people in the door and spend money on their higher ticket items. All of these reasons can be turned around and applied in a floral shop.

How many additional sales could you get by starting to offer pre-wrapped bouquets for a minimal price point. With little labor required it makes it possible to lower the standard mark -up of 3.5 and provide an additional service. I would display them near my cooler so that guests would see our higher end designs and styles to educate them to all the services you offer. You could offer a value price point in a unique decorative wrap that reflects your branded image. Simple up-grades like extra filler, ribbon trims or balloons are just another way to increase sales.

With social net working web sites like Facebook and Twitter to advertise your new lower price points, you can get your word out with no expense. You can also use these media forms to develop your brand. There are several web sites that help to teach ways to maximize your Facebook and Twitter use. As you build your number of contacts your message will be in front of more people, and you can’t beat the price. Many areas have networking groups such as <st1:stockticker>BNI</st1:stockticker> or local Chamber meetings, which can be another inexpensive way to get the word out. I can see taking 10 or so bouquets and quizzing members of the groups about “the best place to purchase fresh flowers and arranged flowers in town”. Those that answer favorably would get a small bouquet with your information attached to it. People would remember your commercial and experience your fresh product.

I hope that Valentine’s was a successful and profitable holiday for you. With 2010 in full swing I am hearing more shops saying that it is looking like an encouraging year ahead. As many of us approached this year’s Valentine’s with a great deal of thought and planning to help secure a strong bottom line. I think it’s important to maintain that same focus for the rest of the year. This same kind of focus can apply to the day to day operations. We all have too much to do and it seems like there is never enough time in the day to get it all done. Just as you approach holiday ordering and operations with a plan and much thought, do that on a smaller scale for your day to day work. There have been 4 steps that have been helpful to me staying organized and productive.

Plan your day the night before. Start by listing the things that you didn’t get done that day. Then list out the other tasks that you need to accomplish the next day. Don’t worry about putting them in any kind of order or priority at this time. Your goal for doing this is to get a list of the important things you need to get done. I recommend this planning session should only last from 10-20 minutes. Remember to “write your plan and work your plan”.

Now, Prioritize your list. Depending on your role in the shop, priorities vary. I still do a lot of the designs for my shop and manage some of the business aspects. So my first priority is the sales of flowers, second the production of flowers. So the first part of my day is spent at the design table or meeting with new clients. It is best to do the hard things first. If you continue to avoid them they will mount up and eventually you’ll end up with a full day of all the things you don’t want to do. Come to work early; you never hear that successful shops start work at the crack of noon. Tell your staff when you are available and when you are working your plan. Take time to instruct your staff what they can be doing while you are occupied. This will allow you accomplish the tasks that will keep your shop profitable and efficient.

Group similar activities together. When you do this it’s much easier to multi-task. It’s helpful for me to make the office off limits to myself during the morning and accomplish the design requirements of the day. Being in the workroom I can see more of the needs there and can organize staff to be efficient for when I am out. My time in the office, like everyone’s, is for my correspondence, then tasks that relate to the finances of the business. After I know what my money situation is, it makes it simple to work on flower orders and other tasks pertaining to the distribution of those funds.

Delegate, delegate, delegate. Don’t do the tasks in your shop that your capable staff is trained to do. Regardless of how hard you try, you can’t do everything. If you teach your staff how things are to be done, let them do it and then evaluate with them. You can delegate with confidence, and you’ll see your lists getting done more and more efficiently. The Utah Professional Florist Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03672412784792577805noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3424734661289050252.post-68942964493147465762010-02-22T17:34:00.000-07:002010-02-22T18:15:17.431-07:00March Board MeetingThe board of the Utah Professional Florist Association will be meeting the first week of March. We invite all of those who are interested to submit any questions or concerns to any of the board members. We would love to hear feed back from our Utah Florists about the recent Valentines Day holiday. Was it a boon in new business for you, or was it a little less than you expected? Please leave a comment, it helps all of us when we discuss the industry and our unique local concerns.

A list of the Board Members is as follows:

Annie Whittaker - Annie's Main Street Floral
Caroline Mabey - Brown's Floral
David Britenbeiker - David's Floral
Deon Gooch - Olive and Dahlia
Dorean Corrin - Whimsicality Inc.
Fran Hutchison - Tulip Tree Floral
Hal Hiatt - Patches of Iris and Violets
Kathy Thomas - Engh Floral
Marilyn Brumfield - The Silver Cricket
Mark Jackson - Ensign Wholesale
Pam March - Every Blooming Thing
Pat Pose - The Posey Place
Stefanie Wedemeyer - The Art Floral
Tracy Barlow AIFD - The Window BoxThe Utah Professional Florist Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03672412784792577805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3424734661289050252.post-28939254423959482092010-01-21T12:36:00.000-07:002010-01-21T16:20:29.792-07:00

I feel that many of you took to heart the current financial situation and planned accordingly. By doing so you were prepared and fared well. Those of you who did not prepare, I hear have a very grim out look. At times like this I think it's better to prepare and fight then to sit and sink. Take some time today to look at 4 areas of your business that can always be improved and must always be monitored for success.

Make it Sparkle: Get into the showroom and clean it up. Products that have not sold and are showing wear, discount and get them out. Use some elbow grease and give your showroom a good cleaning, like your mother would do. When customers come in things will look fresh, and clean, creating a positive image for your store.

Make it Sell: Look at your current buying patterns and eliminate things you "love" that are not selling. Whether its plants, gifts or fresh flowers, now is the time to keep your inventory moving so you have cash flow. Purchase only those things that move regularly or that you can use in multiple ways. Are you planning your flower purchases against actual flower sales to minimize waste? Do you have policies in place that encourage your sales staff to sell the flowers you have available, and do they know what they should be selling?

Make some Sales: Take a look at all those business cards of people you said you would contact or would like to do business with and do it. You never know what will become of that relationship until you try. Networking is a great FREE way to get the word out about your shop. Also call your member wholesalers and see what unique special you can offer. And then be sure to give people a reason to buy. My sign is going to read: Recession Free Bouquet 9.99. Return on Investment: Beauty=100%, Joy=100% Smiles=100%.

Trim the Fat: Are there some things, services or staff positions you can cut? Could you have the windows washed every other month? Are there phone lines that could be eliminated? Is the really "fun" designer producing enough to make money? Each shop is different and each has unique areas which may be in need of improvement. As you examine your shop, consider the annual savings that a combination of small improvements will provide. Sometimes these changes and cuts may require you to do a little bit more work personally, but it could mean the difference in you being here in 6 months or not.

I have found that little changes can have big results. If you are not sure how or where to start, call me or another talented board member. I always come away from board meetings with new ways that I can improve. I know any one of the board members would be willing to share their wisdom with you.

Warm Regards,
Tracy Barlow AIFD, UPFA PresidentThe Utah Professional Florist Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03672412784792577805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3424734661289050252.post-80933722265733663372009-02-01T12:17:00.000-07:002009-02-04T09:52:50.272-07:00February Newsletter from UPFAHello everyone. Here is the latest edition of the Utah Professional Florist Association's newsletter with a message from our President, Tracy Barlow AIFD. Look in the following weeks for updates on news and events from UPFA.

Dear Friends of the association,
I hope you are looking forward to Valentines Day. It’s always a time of stress and hassle but it’s a great time for each of us to put our best foot forward and remind our customers why they love to shop at our stores. That special touch we can give each design, our friendly service that isn’t found in the box stores, our delivery service and the list can go on and on. I always remind my staff this is a huge day because some customers only order flowers a few times a year so we have to WOW them, with the above mentioned benefits, so that they want to keep shopping with us.
Even with a slowing economy, love will still be in the air this Valentines Day. But you might have to fan it a little. I recommend that you still advertise to keep your message in front of customers. Make sure that message is the same one your employee’s are sharing with guests. Even the smallest of staffs can hold a training meeting and review delivery procedures, and special designs you are offering, holiday prices, and some customer service training. Most importantly make sure you are organized. Now more than ever you need to know what your costs are and how much you need to sell your product for. You have to be the business person you should have been during the times of plenty.

We are working hard to get our volume buying opportunities lined up for spring. Kathy Thomas and her committee are in the planning process so we can get information out to you soon about that. And I am Thrilled that we will be hosting our first of many education workshops at Ensign’s on April 19, 2009. Another educational opportunity I fully endorse will be held Sunday March 29 with the theme "Wedding Glitz and Glamour" presented by Hitomi Gilliam at Callister Imports. I believe you can learn something everywhere and you have to take advantage of those opportunities. So support these fabulous wholesalers who are an anchor to our association and industry. If you know of anyone who is interested in the association or if you have any comments contact me at thbarlow@yahoo.com.

Happy Valentines Day,
Tracy Barlow AIFD
President of Utah Professional Florist AssociationThe Utah Professional Florist Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03672412784792577805noreply@blogger.com0
